Our Performance Team

New this season we are very pleased and excited to announce the development of our Performance Team. This opportunity is available for both our recreational and competitive dancers and will include multiple performances,

travel opportunities, various choreographers, fundraising, etc. We would like to give our dancers the opportunity to expand their knowledge and they're understanding of the professional side of dance. Our Performance Team is

required to take regular classes and a one hour choreography class each week to intensively learn routine for

upcoming performances.

Our Competitive Team

Should you wish to solely focus on intense training of specific routines to compete with, your better option may

be our Competitive Team. This is for our most dedicated and serious dancers, giving them an opportunity to

work with new choreographers and various dancers (solo, duet, trio, and group opportunities are available).

Competition involvement provides dancers a chance to goal set, strive to make achievements and short term improvements with their performance & technique, and have fun working hard as a team.

Our competitors participate in three or four competitions (including one in Banff) and focus on specializing and advancing in a specific discipline.

Description of Classes to be offered for the

upcoming 2011/2012 Season

SCC Creative Movement and Fusion Dance - Classes available to children who attend the Springbank Cottage Care. Classes are on Mondays and are held at the Cottage Care Centre in Springbank. Same tuition costs and recital commitments as regular classes.

Creative Movement - For those 3 and 4 year olds looking to start dance and discover balance and creativity through movement. Offering a fun, energetic, and interactive environment to keep those little ones involved and busy during their class each week. From tumbling to tapping, this class helps increase the extent of body movement to improve coordination, control, and muscle awareness. Guaranteed to keep those little ones busy and burn some energy for a full hour each week!

Combo Classes - A great place for our younger dancers to start experiencing various styles and disciplines. With classes for age 5 through 7 we offer various combinations of Jazz, Ballet, Lyrical, Tap, and Hip Hop at differing times throughout the week. Combo classes are helpful for guiding your dancer into what styles may interest them and for building an essential foundation for growth.

NEW for 2011/2012:

  • Primary Jazz/Ballet for age 6-7

  • Hip Hop and Breakdancing for age 5-6

  • Pre-Junior Jazz/Tap for age 6-7

  • Fusion Jazz/Ballet/Hip Hop for age 7-9

Ballet - This discipline is the foundation of technique and balance for all styles of dance. Discipline and creativity are used to improve flexibility, strength, and proper positioning. Ballet technique is essential for improvement and appropriate advancement in other styles of dance as well. Offering various levels including pre-primary to advanced, pointe, and pointe prep, as well as ballet barre specific classes for those more serious or interested in improving more quickly. Ballet is incorporated into almost all classes and is strongly encouraged for all ages by the staff and director at Center Stage.

Jazz - Jazz is a strong technically based style of dance consisting of unique movements, body and musical awareness, intricate foot movements, leaps and turns. In order to excel in jazz, dancers are strongly recommended to have a background in ballet to improve strength and balance. Offering various levels including Junior to Advanced, for all ages.

Lyrical - Lyrical is a combined style of dance including jazz and ballet technique allowing the flexibility to explore various graceful and expressive movements. An emotional and dramatic discipline of dance representing the lyrics and significance of music and song. Offering various levels including beginner to advanced, for all ages.

Hip Hop - Strong and powerful dance movements to Hip Hop and R&B music. Includes different styles of urban dance while increasing an understanding of various music beats and rhythms. Classes designed to concentrate on choreography and memory, without limits to body movements. Hip Hop is energetic and perfect for those looking for an interactive and relaxed style of dance. Offering various levels including Junior to Advanced, for all ages, boys and girls.

Tap - Use of tapping footwear and precise foot movements in various patterns to create an audible form of theatrical dance with music and rhythm awareness. Recommended ballet experience for ankle strength and proper positioning.

Contemporary - A collection of mixed styles derived from modern dance, which does not follow a specific set of techniques. Recommended to help improve and enhance technique and control with influences from ballet, lyrical and jazz. Contemporary explores challenging body positioning and emotions and is often seen as dramatic, interpretive, and rigid.

Musical Theatre - A form of dance that combines technique from Jazz, Ballet, and Lyrical with song and music from stage/theatre performance. Musical Theatre is a fun, outgoing style that improves a dancer’s confidence and creativity.
